What It Means to Be OnlyLocal Verified

Every business listed on OnlyLocal carries our Verified Independent badge. This page explains exactly what that means, how we verify it, and what keeps that standard intact over time. We created the verification process because we believe the word local should mean something. Not just a business with a local phone number. Not a franchise with a local office. A genuinely independent, community-rooted business owned and operated by someone who lives and works in your area.

Section 1

Our Verification Criteria

To earn and maintain the OnlyLocal Verified badge a business must meet every one of the following standards:

Independently owned.

The business is not a franchise, corporate subsidiary, or private equity owned operation. It is owned outright by an individual or family who makes all business decisions without a corporate parent or franchisor.

Owner-led.

The owner is actively involved in the day-to-day operation of the business. They are not a passive investor. In most cases the owner is on the job personally or directly manages the team that is.

Community rooted.

The business primarily serves the local area it is listed in. The owner lives in or near the community they serve. They have genuine ties to the neighborhoods they work in.

Legitimately operating.

The business holds a valid state business license. They carry appropriate liability insurance for their trade. Any required trade licenses or certifications are current and valid.

Honest representation.

Everything on the business's OnlyLocal profile is accurate. Their services, service area, years in business, and ownership information are truthful and up to date.

Section 2

How We Verify

Every business goes through a two-stage verification process before their badge is activated.

Stage 1

Records check.

We confirm the business holds an active state business license, their Google Business Profile exists and matches their listing, and they have been operating for at least one year.

Stage 2

Verification call.

A member of the OnlyLocal team speaks directly with the business owner by phone. During this call we confirm the business is independently owned and not franchised or corporate-owned, the owner is actively involved in operations, the business primarily serves its listed community, and insurance and licensing are current. This call typically takes 15 to 20 minutes.

Only businesses that pass both stages receive the Verified Independent badge.

Section 3

Annual Renewal

Verification is not a one-time checkbox. Every OnlyLocal verified business renews their status annually. We require annual renewal because businesses change. Ownership transfers. Companies get acquired. A franchise moves into a neighborhood under a local-sounding name. Annual renewal ensures that every badge on our platform reflects the current reality of that business, not just who they were when they first signed up.

The renewal process mirrors the original verification — a brief records check followed by a short renewal call. Businesses that continue to meet our standards renew easily. Businesses that have changed in ways that no longer meet our criteria are removed from the platform.

Section 4

What Gets a Business Removed

We take the integrity of our verified network seriously. A business loses their verified status and is removed from OnlyLocal if any of the following occur:

  • 1The business is sold to or acquired by a corporate entity or private equity firm.
  • 2The business converts to a franchise model.
  • 3The owner is no longer actively involved in operations.
  • 4The business fails to renew their annual verification.
  • 5A homeowner reports a material misrepresentation and our investigation confirms it.
  • 6The business's license or required insurance lapses.

When a business is removed we notify homeowners who have previously used that business through OnlyLocal so they always know who they are dealing with.

Section 5

Reporting a Concern

If you are a homeowner and you believe a listed business does not meet our verification standards we want to know. Every report is investigated within 72 hours. If the concern is substantiated the business is removed. You can report a concern through our contact page with the business name and the nature of your concern. We will follow up with you directly.

Section 6

A Note on What We Are Not

OnlyLocal is not a licensing authority. We are not a government agency. We do not provide legal certification of any kind. Our verification is a trust standard — our commitment to homeowners that every business on our platform has been checked against the criteria above and continues to meet them annually. We do not guarantee the quality of any specific job or transaction. What we guarantee is that every business you find here is genuinely independently owned and has been verified as such.
